Dieter Rombach is heading the research group for Software Engineering at the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany. Dieter Rombach's research interests are in software engineering -- especially software product lines, software inspection and quality assurance, measurement of software processes and products, process-centered software development support, experimentation and empirical studies. Empiricism is an essential prerequisite for the application of human-based development methods. Without an explicit understanding of the impact of methods and processes on product characteristics, a repetition of project results can not be guaranteed. At the research group, an empirical methodology was developed, which is based on the GQM paradigm and on a systematic combination of controlled experiments and case studies, as well as an organization of empirical results based on the Experience Factory Paradigm. Dieter Rombach is internationally recognized for being one of the founders of the sub-discipline of "experimental software engineering". His professional services include numerous conference and program chair positions (e.g., general chair of the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE 1996 in Berlin), program chair of ICSE 2006 in Beijing, China), associate editor positions of international journals (e.g., Springer's Journal for Empirical Software Engineering, ACM TOSEM) and editor positions of international journals (e.g., IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, IEEE Computer, IEE International Journal on Software Process). He is a Fellow of the IEEE.
