Since 2002 he is the director of the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach. He is Professor for mathematics at the University of Kaiserslautern since 1981 where he is heading the research group for Algebraic Geometry, Computer Algebra and Singularity Theory. His research interests are Singularity Theory and the development and implementation of algorithms to solve mathematical problems by using Computer Algebra. Together with G. Pfister and H. Schönemann, he develops the internationally widespread Computer Algebra system SINGULAR which is used in theoretical research as well as in applying Algebraic Geometry and Computer Algebra to real problems coming from industry. He is Editor-in-Chief of Oberwolfach Workshop Reports (OWR), Associate Editor of Revista Mathematica Complutense and member of several international evaluation committees. Since 1993 he is head of the Center for Computer Algebra, a scientific institution of the departments of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Electrical Engineering at the University of Kaiserslautern.
