The Rheinland-Pfalz Cluster of Excellence "Dependable Adaptive Systems and Mathematical Modeling" successfully conducted its First Summer school for excellent graduate and PhD students in mathematics and computer science in Kaiserslautern.

The pictures on the right give an impression of the city and surroundings of Kaiserslautern. Local attractions include
- the Stiftskirche (Collegiate Church) dating from the 16th century and considered to be the most important late gothic hall church in southwest Germany
- the ruins of the Kaiserspfalz (Imperial Palace) of Barbarossa
- the Fruchthalle, which was the seat of the revolutionary government of the Palatinate
- the Fritz-Walter-Stadion, one of the arenas of the FIFA World Cup 2006
- the Garden Show Kaiserslautern and the Japanese Garden
- Kaiserslautern's Old Town and its restaurants and pubs
The centrepiece of the Western Palatinate region is the Palatinate Forest Conservation Area, the largest and also warmest forestland in Germany where nature is mostly untouched. With a surface area of 180 000 hectares, it covers approximately one third of the Palatinate. It is a perfect background for relaxing walks as well as for intensive active sports.
Some places to visit further afield are the Rhine Valley (40 castles and fortresses, stretched along a mere 65 km of the River Rhine between the cities of Bingen and Coblence, constitute one of the most favorite tourist attractions), the city of Heidelberg (the picturesque old town and its castle are world-famous) and the villages along the German Wine Route.

The weather in August is usally warm with an average temperature above 20°C.

The Fruchthalle is a beautiful concert and banqueting hall in the center of Kaiserslautern. Its style reminds of the Florentine patrician palaces of Early Renaissance.
The Fritz Walter Stadium is among the classical arenas in Germany. Kaiserslautern has been selected as an official venue for the Soccer World Cup 2006.
The Palatinate region has the largest continuous stretch of vineyards and forestland in Germany.
The historical hostelry Zum Spinnrädl (The Spinning Wheel), a half-timbered building dating from 1740.
The Japanese Garden of Kaiserslautern is among the largest parks of this kind in Europe.
